Reverse audio online
I built this so you can play a sound backwards without installing anything. Choose a file, listen to the preview and save the reversed version.
or drop it here
How it works, and what stays on your device
Your browser decodes the file and I put every sample in the opposite order on every channel, so the last sound comes first and the first comes last. Nothing else is changed: the volume, the stereo balance and the length stay as they were.
Files are decoded at 44.1 kHz, so a file at another sample rate is resampled once before it is reversed. Mono stays mono and stereo stays stereo.
A WAV file is saved as WAV and an MP3 as MP3. Files in other formats, such as M4A, OGG or FLAC, are saved as MP3 by default, because MP3 and WAV are the two formats I can write in the browser. You can switch between the two before saving. MP3 is written at 192 kbps unless you pick another quality, and in an MP3 files with more than two channels are mixed down to stereo. An MP3 can come out a touch longer than the original, because the format pads the start and the end.
The preview plays the reversed sound.
Nothing is uploaded. The page never sends your audio anywhere, there is no account, and closing the tab clears the file from memory. The file can be up to 200 MB.
Need only part of a file? Cut it down first. Open the audio trimmer
MP3 encoding uses LAME through lamejs, both under the LGPL. Read the licence
Frequently asked questions
How do I play an MP3 backwards online?
Choose the file and press Reverse and save, or listen to the preview first. Decoding, reversing and encoding all happen in your browser, so the audio never leaves your device.
Does reversing an MP3 lose quality?
The page decodes the file, reverses the sound and encodes it again, so an MP3 is encoded a second time and loses a little detail. Save as WAV if you want no further loss.
Can I reverse only part of a file?
Not on this page. Cut the part you want in the audio trimmer first, then reverse that file here.
Does the new file keep the title, artist and cover art?
No. I process the sound only, so the new file has no tags. Add them in your player or a tag editor afterwards.
